From Mechanism to Medication: Examining Neural Circuitry Underlying Opioid Reward and Treatment Strategies for Opioid Use Disorder

Training Format:

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF TOPIC:   I will begin by presenting basic neuroscience research on opioid reward and opioid seeking, providing an overview of the neural mechanisms and circuitry underlying opioid addiction-related behaviors. I will then segue into presenting a new study funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse Clinical Trials Network (NIDA CTN). The major goals of this study are to 1) test pharmacotherapies and mobile phone app interventions to improve treatment retention among individuals initiating medication for opioid use disorder (OUD), and 2) test strategies to improve outcomes among individuals who have achieved stable remission on medication for OUD and have expressed the desire to discontinue that medication.
